The Second Half of Summer on the Eastern Shore

The Schooner Sultana

The Schooner Sultana

School supplies and fall travel ads are the first signs of summer’s end. In spite of Christmas in July and Halloween decorations for sale in August, the days are still long and bright.

Pirates and Wenches Weekend: From Aug. 9-11 buccaneers and landlubbers alike invade the waterside town of Rock Hall, Maryland for its annual Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend. Take part in rum tastings, a beach party and a decorated dinghy contest. Visit the live pirate encampment and don your best pirate finery for the Buccaneer’s Ball. It’s okay to bring the kids – there will be storytelling, games, and crafts for the smallest sea rovers. For more information on the festivities click  Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend.

The Chesapeake Wine Trail: Taste your way responsibly from the top of the Shore in Cecil County through Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, Dorchester, and Worcestor, all the way to Wicomico County at the end of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Near the waterways, fields and farmlands enjoy a selection of rose, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot and sparkling wines that are in their own right the pride of the Eastern Shore. For more information on tastings, special events and directions, click Chesapeake Wine Trail.

The Schooner Sultana. Chestertown Harbor (site of another colonial-era tea-party) is the home port of the Schooner Sultana, a replica of the smallest schooner to serve in the British Navy. Also known as the “Schoolship of the Chesapeake”, the Sultana has offered educational programs for thousands of students. Sign up and take a public two-hour sail around the Chester River.  Enjoy an ecology sail and taste the bounty of the Chester River or a  night or daytime musical sail with local artists. Come back to Chestertown in the fall for the annual Downrigging Weekend. At the end of the sailing season, tall ships and wooden boats sail into Chestertown for three days of maritime history, music, fireworks, tall ship tours and celebration. For more information click Schooner Sultana.

The Harriet Tubman Museum and Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. This Cambridge, Maryland museum celebrates the life of the woman called Moses – Union Army nurse, spy, abolitionist and the most famous and successful Underground Railroad conductor in the nation’s history. To book an Underground Railroad Tour of Tubman’s birthplace and other historic African American sites in Cambridge, Maryland, click Harriet Tubman Museum.  Take a tour of the 125 mile byway, a national road “dedicated to Harriet Tubman — a pioneer of freedom.”  The self-guided tour include stops at 30 sites, including the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument. Click Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway  to plan your journey.

So come on over, up, down or across – the light is still on and there’s plenty to see and do on the Shore.
